Eng Seng Crabs - Joo Chiat [CLOSED]
I've always been put off by the comments and feedback from this place. Bad service, sold out early etc.. But the consistent feedback is that this is the go-to for Black Pepper Crabs. And indeed it is! You'll get used to their service, I thought they were fairly pleasant and did their best albeit slightly overbearing in taking your orders - no dancing around zero patience.
Though a tad pricey ($80/kg), this is one of my favourite Black Pepper Crabs. Where it isn't too sweet, too peppery, too dry or too wet. Immediately you lick your fingers and you taste the Wok Hei, made intense by the butter's low burning point. Lots of butter. The crabs were just delivered as we sat down at 6pm - perhaps a second batch. It was fresh, the meat was firm and juicy. This was a 1.1kg male Sri Lankan crab.
This Punggol styled Mee Goreng was on every table. Medium spiciness but very savoury, cooked al dente. Ingredients were stingy, some cheap prawns and squids, and the Chye Sim was a tad of a mismatch.
The You Tiao deep fried doughsticks with fish paste was deceivingly nice despite its lack lustre appearance. It was not as dry or overly crunchy as the others. Just crispy on the surface, with a soft and fluffy dough wrapping the fish paste.
She did also recommend the Har Jeong Kai Chicken in Prawn Paste but we didn't have space for that. Maybe next time. The crowds came in after 6:30pm, but the crabs were indeed selling out very fast. Call to pre-order if you can, otherwise go early.
