Cocotte - Signature Poulet

We made our way to Cocotte, a few mins walk from Rochor MRT. An unexpected find amidst the neighbour of old shophouses and Little India. Wanderlust Hotel where Cocotte sits, hides itself blended into its surroundings. Entering the "lobby", and the waiting area of the restaurant you'd find dashes of quaint retro pieces of furniture and placements. Like a barber's chair from the 80s.

I was told that I had to try their Signature Chicken Roast. Not so much the French Poulet de Bresse, but a Free Range Chicken from Malaysia free of Antibiotics or Hormones. The Poulet Roti ($60) served with Potatoes and Vegetables, in my honest opinion is far from worth its weight. Just a Roast Chicken if you ask me.

Seow Choon Hua FooChow Fishballs

Walking along Arab St, you would not expect this - neither did I expect Sushi Airways there too. But just next door to ARC Coffee, a coffeeshop rough and rugged, with signs and prices still in Mandarin. If you did not know, you'd have little clue what this eating house sells.

My mother being Hockchia, I just had to try this store when I ran google of this place - serving old school Foo Chow Fishball Noodles. Foo Chow Fishballs are different in that they are stuffed with minced pork. It is authentic, with a big heavy fish paste engulfing minced pork flavoured just like times of old.

Also try their Red Rice Wine Chicken!

Xiao Di Hokkien Mee

From the carpark, it can be quite difficult to find this place. But this coffeeshop is actually just facing the main road of Serangoon Ave 1. Guan Hock Tiong Eating House is at the corner of Serangoon Ave 1 and Ang Mo Kio Ave 1.

I was given a number and waited. So happy to see the next generation taking up the challenge to continue our hawker traditions. A young lad busying around in his neat kitchen, peering out occasionally to see the reactions of his customers to his food.

Not sure if he fries his shells for the broth, but the murkiness of his broth seems to signal both. A strong savoury flavour of the Prawn Guts. Tasty. Great control of his Garlic, strong but not overpowering the Prawn flavours. His Wok Hei is good, with fragrances of Spring Onions and Egg well played.

The Pork Lard is amazing! Freshly deep fried, Crispy and Light. Giving so much depth to the mouth of the dish, adding a slight bitter dimensions to this savoury explosion.
