Yung Kee - HK

We had heard that a court order was due to have this place closed down. So we had to make one last attempt to eat here. We were directed upstairs to take a number, and sit in a waiting area for our number to be called.

Of cos the Signature Roast Goose (HKD200) had to be ordered. For the price we thought this was worth the price. The Roast made the skin crispy, yet the meat was tender and very juicy. As with most of the Roasts in HK, the meat can be salty for some, but here they compensated this by drenching the dish with a savoury sauce. Great with their plum sauce too.

There were Set packages on the menu from HKD550 per person, but none of the sets had a whole steamed fish. So we had asked for the "Seasonal Prices". What I saw was 110HKD, and I can logically presume it is per 100g. What I had not expected was for this small fish, which they had presented to me prior, to weigh 1.5kg. So this Steamed Red Grouper ended up costing HKD 1,600. I knew I had been ripped off, but I did not wish to pursue the matter. The fish was very good though. Steamed to perfection, the meat was firm but melted in our mouths. The meat was even sweet, without the fishy tastes. The spring onions were fresh and complemented the fish and its Soya Sauce base.

We had this dish recommended by the Maitre D. We didn't ask for its price, but neither did we expect this to be a S$100. Crab Roe and Emperor Vegetables (HKD500). Crunchy and clean and fresh, this Emperor vegetables (also known as the Basella Alba) was good. We could have done without the Crab Roe sauce though.

All in all, a good experience that could have been mitigated if we were too captivated by the thought of eating there. If you are just up for the Roast Goose, there are many places in Hong Kong that does a good Goose. If you want a flavour from this family, go to Kam's at Wan Chai where the younger brother and mother runs their kitchen.
