Si Wei Mao Cai - Szechuan

In Chinatown itself, dozens of Szechuan restaurants have sprouted. I've tried Old Chengdu, which remains my favourite, and I have tried Szechuan Dou Hua at UOB Plaza. By recommendation of a colleague, we decided to try this out.

Opened by a young lady boss who ensures the smooth running of the place. They have 3 highly recommended dishes: The LangZhi Catfish, the Duck and

The LangZhi Catfish (浪子鲶鱼) was the Signature dish of this restaurant. Catfish cooked in Chilli Oil, with standard Szechuan peppercorns and chillis, served with "Jews Ear" a Fungi. It's Spicy and very Salty, good to have with Rice. The fish has a lot of bones though, but the meat is soft.

This is a standard Sezchuan starter, even served in Hunan cuisines - Century Eggs served with chilli oil and soya sauce. A great appetizer.

Braised Duck and Potatoes (土豆鸭). This is also another Signature dish and recommended by them. The duck was very flavourful, its meat soft and tender from being braised. The potatoes soaked with the flavours of the sauce are yummy!

How can you have Szechuan cuisine without ordering the famous Fried Chicken dices in Dried Chilli? I felt that the ones at Szechuan DouHua is better. Here, the chicken is diced too small, and fried too dry. Flavour wise, it is not marinated enough. I'd give this a pass if you are here.

This seemingly very simple dish, Stir Fried Cabbage, is a nice respite to everything spicy. However, it does not deviate from the salty though. Good with rice...
