Daisy's Dream Kitchen - Peranakan Cuisine

Owned by the mother of the famous Dim Sum Dolly, Selena Tan, we heard about this hidden gem in the West serving home-styled Peranakan dishes and simply had to try. With only a handful of authentic Peranakan restaurants around- the notable likes of Ivins, Guan Hoe Soon, Violet Oon and the one-star Candlenut. Tucked away along a row of shophouses in a HDB estate where you would typically find hair salons and provision shops. The following dishes were the signatures recommended.

Squid Ink Sotong $12
It was tasty but I felt that the squid wasn't cooked well enough. It should have been processed with Olive Oil or Sous Vide instead. The texture of the meat felt a tad overcooked. The sauce tasted primitive, old school lacking any sophistication of depth.

Sayur Lodeh $12
This mixed vegetables dish cooked in coconut milk and sambal, is commonly found in most Nasi Padang stalls. One of my favourite dishes, it does not disappoint here.  But I felt that the fried beancurd here could have been replaced by Tau Pok instead - it was a tad too dry and does not soak up the flavours.

Ayam Buah Keluak $10
The iconic Peranakan dish you have to order. The otherwise poisonous nut, soaked and cleaned for days, cooked deshelled and stuffed with minced pork. Seldom you get bibiks who screws up this dish. Goes well with plain rice.

Ngoh Hiang $8
These deep fried spring rolls look really simple, but it tastes really good. The difficulty is how to achieve a juicy minced pork filling with bits of crunchy water chestnut chunks.
