Sum Yi Tai - Preview Menu [CLOSED]

Post Butter Factory, this was their next project - Sum Yi Tai. It translates as the Third Wife.
Prior to its official opening in Apr, they have launched a Preview Menu for you to try all of their dishes without busting your wallet. Each dish is only $8.

Located in the middle of Boon Tat Street, next to No Menu, the place welcomes you into a narrow stretch, dimly lit with an eccentric mix of retro asian memories. It is of a casual dining setting, with high tables and chairs. Whilst apart from the ground floor, they also have a roof top VIP lounge area to enjoy your favourite Whiskeys and drinks.

The Salted Egg King Prawns with Lime Zest was light on the taste unlike the thick artery-clogging sauce you'd find it the Tse Char shops, glazed over fairly large sized Glass Prawns.

Next were the Maple Honey Glazed Char Siew. This means they are sweeter than the ones you would get at a Shao La stall, but equally charred to retain a traditional texture on tender meats.

This is on the top of their "My Favourite Sins" section, the Sum Yi Tai's Signature XO Carrot Cake. Indeed, this was one of my favourite dishes tonight as well. It has got the fragrance from the XO and its corresponding "Wok Hei", but also from its salted fish bits! Every ingredient here goes well with each other. What sets it apart from the Carrot Cake at Canton-I at the Ion is a tinge of Spice. Full of Flavours from the Chinese Kitchen... Love it.

The last on the Favourite Sins section is the Skewered Tofu with Szechuan Ma Po Dipping Sauce. Unfortunately this did not work out that well. I am sure this will be fine tuned prior to the opening. The tofu was too crispy, perhaps due to the small size of the cubes it will cook too fast. The dipping sauce is light, and would be better off as a drizzle rather than a dipping sauce.

Then there is the "Dragon's Selection"... It has the Salmon Skins with Salted Egg & Lime Zest, but I simply couldn't resist a Sio Ba! The Crispy Roast Pork with Chilli Oil dip and a swash of English Mustard. No frills, no fancy cooking. This is pure old school, roast pork belly and good chilli to go with it. A must have, to go with your happy hour Lager!
